Schizophrenia
-Envision that you are sitting in a room and your child comes to you and says that someone is trying to kill him, there is someone in the mirror spying or that on the way to school the bus’s radio was sending him special messages. Now what would you think? Like myself, you would probably think that your child is playing a bad joke or if it persist, he/she is smoking crystal-meth. You take your child to the doctor… your wrong. For one part it is good, but for another part it is bad, your child has just been diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Was your child born with this? Is this genetic? Contagious? What are the symptoms? Does this mean that your child will have a split personality? Schizophrenia is an odd diseases, although a very broad and complicated this is a brief summary of schizophrenia, a treatable but incurable diseases. According to the 2002 encyclopedia Britannica edition, in 1899 psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin first diagnosed schizophrenia as Manic-Depressive Psychosis . Kraepelin distinguished at least three subtypes of Manic-Depressive Psychosis (schizophrenia): Hebephrenic Inappropriate emotional reactions and behavior Paranoia Delusions of grandeur and persecution
disrupted, negativism, auditory hallucinations Treatments for schizophrenia include various ant psychotic medications that help bring biochemical imbalances closer to normal. The medications help reduce the episodes that the patients have and helps maintain coherent thoughts. The treatment of schizophrenia with mediations does not cure it nor does it prevent any more episodes. Other than oral medication that in some cases does not have affect on the person or the symptoms (just as any prescription medications) are too harsh. A patients can also have psychosocial treatments, rehabilitation, individual psychotherapy, family education and self help groups. There is not cure for schizophrenia. The symptoms that the individuals face with this disorder is that their perceptions of reality is a lot different from the people that surround them. They often hear internal voices, they believe that others can read their mind and control their thoughts. People with this illness also think that people plot on ways to kill them. This disease causes hallucinations, delusions, frightening feelings, anxiety and confusion which causes them to withdraw for their surroundings. People with schizophrenia also act different at times; one moment they can be distant, preoccupied, may not move for hours or even say a word but sometimes they start to act very active, very occupied, vigilant and alert (psychiatry 24x7). Undifferentiated Behavioral symptoms of any of the four previously mentioned Residual (Mild symptoms) delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and catatonic behavior Overall, schizophrenia has different types and stages, some less severe than other. A lot of the brain functions are disrupted due to the disorder. In schizophrenia, genetics and stress play an enormous role in how the disorder is developed. Although not all patients benefit from ant- psychotic drugs, they are very helpful for people with this disorder, it helps them with fewer episodes of delusions and hallucinations. Unfortunately I was not able to go into the wide depth of this disease but with this report you are now able to understand what ‘split mind’ is and what effects this disease has on the patients.
