On April 24th, the National Football League will be starting its annual draft. In this process the coaches and owners decide who will be playing for each team, with every franchise wanting to get the best and the strongest players onto their team. One man by the name of Ben Rothlesberger is gaining the attention of all teams as their choice for quarterback and rising as the number one draft pick (LynxMinus, n.d.). This attention is due to incredible ability to throw the ball with laser-accuracy, large stature, and an arm like a cannon; these are all qualities that make a football player a great man. In much the same way, political systems around the world operate on an individual’s usefulness to determine their importance and role. These select few that are first on the NFL’s draft pick are comparable to the political elites of a society, and the coaches and owners who choose the players are comparable to a nation’s leader or leaders. The United States, Mexico, and Great Britain are nations that follow such a system; picking the best of the best to lead their nations and, just like the drafting of Rothlesberger, the system is usually based on achievement. However, the political patronage system in Mexico is still extremely prevalent. Under such a system an individual seeking to rise in the political will often do “favors” for an established political leader in exchange for their increasing importance and acceptance as a politician (Kesselman, 2000). Often a symbiosis will occur with the success or defeat of a politician greatly affecting another, attached, politician. The House of Commons is an entirely elected body and the House of Lords maintains a partially elected body with a small number of hereditary seats (World-Atlas.org, 2004). The queen, currently Queen Elizabeth II, chooses the head of government from among the majority party which is selected through a plurality system (Kesselman, 2000). The Prime Minister must call for elections within a five year time frame. Parliament is then dissolved and elections held once again to determine the leader of government. This process of elections can also be brought about with a vote of confidence by the majority party or with a vote of censure by any other party. The legitimacy is rarely questioned as the unwritten British constitution lays out guidelines of tradition which are adhered to as well as the fact that elections tend to be fair and represent the people justly. The study of political elites in the United States, Mexico, and Great Britain shows many similarities in the process of choosing and legitimizing leaders. All nations require a party’s support, lest an individual fall into the rarely-elected independent category, yet each maintains different methods of attaining said acceptance into political parties. It can hardly be denied that, although there tends to be some ascription practices, the real power of an individual comes from their own achievements and their subsequent support by those that they lead.
