Same Sex Marriage

In the United States, marriage is more than just a promise of love to one another. Marriage permits financial responsibility as well as financial benefits. Society has become accustomed to what they believe is “normal” and many people believe that same-sex marriage is not normal. Marriage is a basic human right of every citizen, but not if you are gay. Because our country has been founded on the constitution, in which all men are created equal; it would be unconstitutional to deny the basic human and legal right of marriage to a class of individuals due to their sexual preference. In the past, the United States has denied interracial marriage. Interracial marriage was banned and prohibited until in 1967 the Supreme Court ruled such bans unconstitutional (Lawinfo.com). Today, there are no such laws that ban interracial marriage. The times are changing and now, more than ever, many gay and lesbians are having committed relationships. Banning marriage due to sexual preference is discrimination.

Banning same sex marriage has already been confirmed a violation of the constitution in the state of Hawaii. The case began in 1991 when three same-sex couples, who had been denied marriage licenses, brought a lawsuit to the state
