Guided Comparison Observation

On a windy Saturday evening I observed my two nephews of age four and eight. The four-year-old obi is a male who is very tall and thin for his age. Right knows he is in preschool in Pennsylvania. He has dirty blonde hair and hazel green eyes. He loves basketball and enjoys being out doors. The eight years old Jets is also a male very tall for his age but is big built. Right now Jet is finishing the second grade also in Pennsylvania. He loves football but also enjoys playing video games and reading.

In this paper I will be talking about the kid's physical development such as gross and fine motor skills and will be including a drawing. Also I will talk about cognitive development whose is different stages concrete operational and proportional. In cognitive development we will see many skills such as classification conservation and more. And finally I will talk about thee child's psychosocial development, which is Erikson's stage, which they are at. The first one I will talk about is physical development.

Physical development is the physical appearance or the ability to do things (Elkind.d, 1994,pg. 90). Physical development includes such things as gross motor skills and fine

I drew a big triangle and a little circle and asked both boys to cut out each shape separately and then draw them. Obi said 'I'm cutting my circle first". He did a good job at cutting the circle but when he cut the triangle he cut off one corner. Jet cut both of his shapes out with messing up. He did it so well no even the pen mark was showing he told me " I love to cut out shapes in school". Jet had no problem drawing either one of his shapes but Obi had trouble with his triangle. "They will not be able to draw a triangle until the age of five and boys are slower at developing there fine motor skills". (Dr Shapiro, L, 2003, pg. 199).

During this observation I observed several types of play. Eight year olds are easily entertained and can enjoy playing by themselves as some ages can not and become bored quicker (PHD Ames, L 1990 pg. 107). One of the types of play I observed was imitation the boys were pretending to be Lord of the rings. We also did learning play that is an opportunity for the children to learn new behaviors and social roles and things through play(Elkind ,D 1994). They also used functional play by simple receptive movements with their body or with objects. And the final play was associative play where the children talked to each other but did not assign task or jobs to one another.

Next I took four pennies and laid them out in two rows one spread out the other one close together this in conservation of space. Both Obi and Jet both answered that the coin more spread out had more coins even though they counted the amount of pennies. After that we did the conservation of mass I took one sock and rolled in up and one sock laid down. Obi told me the sock laid out was bigger because it was longer but Jet disagreed he said the one in the ball was bigger because it looked bigger and was higher. After conversation we went to classification.

Gross motor skills involve muscles in the arms, legs, and torso. While observing obi and jets I asked them to do several of these skills such as jump, skip, throw, run, and hop. We were playing the game Simon says and I asked them both to jump obi the four years olds jump was very low to the floor as were Jets was higher and more balanced. The reason why is because at four years old they still are growing fast and going through physical growth (Brazelton, B, 2001).
