Lit Review
There are both good and bad points within Miguel Martinez's essay, "Bastard". He begins with two strong paragraphs relating to his perception of a father and son relationship. He based his perception of father and son relationships on societies various definitions within literature, television and word of mouth from his friends. The first two paragraphs of the essay appear to relate to the author's search to discover what a father and son relationship really is. It becomes evident that he gets lost in his thoughts throughout the remainder of the essay.In paragraph, one and two the author provides detailed thoughts he has regarding father and son relationships. He gives strong examples of what others have lead him to believe such as "…this strange being, a sort of God, they call Daddy". In addition, quickly points out what he believes based upon his life, "There is no biological instinct inside us saying there should be someone else". The author appears content that it is just he and his mother. In the third paragraph, his essay begins to provide less detail and appears to jump in time periods. The
Paragraph four begins by stating that his mother was able to spend time with him when he was sixteen, however, clearly notes that he was set in his ways by then. Does this mean he was rebellious or perhaps angry for the years they were not able to spend to together? He notes that he left home, however, does not provide his age at the time he left. He states he left home for eight months and upon his return, his mother begged him to join the Navy. Since you must be eighteen to sign up with the Navy the reader is left to assume that between the ages of sixteen to eighteen he and his mother did not get along well. He states upon his return he was hurt knowing he had hurt his mom leaving her to feel as a failure. What made her feel as though she was a failure? He explains that his mother asked him if he wandered who his father was and he said no he did not he was content assuming he was dead since she had told him that years ago. What made his mother tell him his father was alive and lived in South Carolina after so many years of saying he was dead? Why did his mother give him the contact information only
