The Matrix: Themes Picked for the Audience

People of current culture have trouble digesting a biblical movie. The Matrix is a movie that is loaded with references to many different themes throughout. People in general have different takes upon the movie. Some see Neo as Christ, Morpheus as God, or the movie as a fairy tale. All of these views are arguable and they all have references made to them throughout the movie. One thing is certain though, the biblical references are plentiful, to say the least. The fairy tale references such as Neo as Alice or the Sleeping Beauty theme, during the resurrection scene, are there for a separate purpose, however. They are placed throughout it in order to get the difficult concept of the movie across to people. I see Morpheus as Christ and the crew as his disciples. This is explained by Morpheus’ search for them, the people he will need in order to save the world. In particular, I see Neo as the biblical hero and disciple Peter. Neo, being “the one” is most important to Morpheus because like Peter, Neo is the one who will rebuild the world. In Matthew 16:18 Jesus says, “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church”. Therefore in The Matrix, Neo is like

Neo’s blind faith is evident as he follows Morpheus’ instructions on how to get out of the building without having the agents spot him. Neo however, chooses to not go out on the scaffold and therefore doubts what Morpheus (Jesus) had told him. He ends up leaving with the agents. The next day however, he gets a call from Morpheus and once again chooses to listen to him. Altogether this sequence of events shows that Neo, although doubtful in certain instances, is still willing to put him faith in Morpheus. This is extremely similar to an encounter that Peter has with Jesus. This encounter occurs when Peter is at sea in the middle of a storm. Jesus came to him, walking across the high swells of the ocean. In Matthew 14:27-31 it is written,

Peter like Neo is willing to follow the Lord, but they are not always strong in their faith to him. This creates a problem for each of them, since they deny the Lord and therefore are unable to find their purpose in life, or use themselves to the full potential. Neo, like Peter, will only realize who he is once he has been reborn.

In the movie, Neo’s rebirth is obvious. He is killed by the agents, only to be brought back to life by means of love. When he comes back he is able to fully understand the matrix and is able to use that to make himself nearly invincible. This rebirth is what Morpheus has been waiting for. It is the proof-positive that Neo is, in fact, “the one”. This however, did not occur until the very end of the movie, by which point Neo has denied Morpheus several times, including in the office building. Like Peter, Neo has to be reborn in order to change the way he sees things. Peter’s rebirth is not in a physical sense, but in more of a mental sense. Peter goes through a symbolic death and rebirth before he realizes his importance. In Matthew 26:75 just after Peter has denied Christ for the third time, the scripture says, “And he [Peter] went out, and wept bitterly.” This shows the new understanding that Peter has reached. Only now can he accept and change according to Christ. Only now can Peter become “the one” on whom Christ will build the church. Neo’s role is similar. Christ plans on saving the world by building a church by means of Peter where as Morpheus plans on saving the world by destroying the matrix by means of Neo.

came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,

Morpheus: Yes. I’ve been looking for you, Neo
