Archetypes in A Clockwork Orange, et al.

Carvers, Death of a Salesman, and A Clockwork Orange, the ‘Death Phase’ is obvious as the hero’s of each work go through an archetypal formula of the descent of life to the end of it completely.

Alternating the past and present, Jane Urquhart’s The Stone Carvers is a

combination of small personal stories. Klara Becker, a spinster and stone carver in

German-settled southern Ontario, becomes the foremost important character of the novel whose life is told from a young age to her mid forties. As a young girl, Klara falls in love with a brooding, Irish young man named Eamon. The two become particularly close, but when young Eamon begins to demonstrate a love for planes, Klara feels secondary to this love. This leads Eamon’s aspiration to join the war to anger Klara.

Finally, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is the story of a sadistic adolescent, whose obsession with sex and violence leads him to encounter betrayal, isolation, and a restrain from free will. The story begins with Alex, a young teenager who leads a gang of friends who find pleasure in terrorizing those they encounter. As the leader of the four young boys, Alex controls them in every way. With this, the 3 followers – Dim, Georgie and Pete – become tired of Alex and his commands. The boys plan their revenge on Alex and at the time of a rampage, they smash a bottle on his head and flee before the police come. At this point, the ‘Death Phase’ becomes evident. Alex’s friends and pleasures are taken away as well as his freedom. Alex’s fall occurs between the transition from an uncontrolled teenager to a strapped down prisoner. The freedom of choice that Alex possesses shortly ends by the first part of the book: “’A real pleasure this is,’ I heard another Millicent goloss say as I was tolchocked very rough and skorry into the auto, ‘Little Alex all to ourselves.’” The second aspect of the ‘Death Phase’ is the isolation from society that Alex receives in prison. Alex’s uncontrolled actions are to be corrected in the second part of the book, where he is no longer Alex, but simply 6655321. The hero has been confined and now in State Jail 84F must learn to follow the rules and of the government and police. Although obvious to most that Alex does not want to be there, he pretends that he is getting better and that the isolation and menial work he does is helping. He receives an offer from a group of psychologists to undergo a experiment which also promises to release him from jail. Alex agrees to take this offer. Ludovico’s Treatment, which Alex agrees to try, is a scientific method for taking moral choice away from troublesome criminals. After being conditioned, the hero realizes he is forced to be good and becomes nauseous with intense pain whenever he has a violent thought: “He has no real choice, has he?
