In a world of battling monsters, Canada seemed quiet during the constant dissension of the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Although the Cold War focused mainly on the two most powerful countries of that time, this event, lasting approximately four decades, shaped our humble country. During the end of 1940’s through the 1980’s, the world was hushed in fear of a battle brewing between the former war allies, United States and the Soviet Union. Here, the kings of each opposite worlds clashed. Capitalism versus communism, freedom versus totalitarianism and democracy versus dictatorship, conflicted. However, most fearfully, it was a war of intelligence. Each country was keen in discovering what their enemy was doing. With this, spies existed beneath the naked eye. The concepts of trust and loyalty were but an illusion. Canada, between all this, stood aside in isolationism. Consequently, Canada paid very little attention to the actions and involvement of the Soviet Union within the country. However, all this changed on September 5, 1945, when Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk revealed documents proving the existence of Russian espionage in Canada. Igor Gouzenko was born in January 13, 1919 in Moscow, Rogachov.
As a result of Gouzenko’s defection, countries all over the world became aware of the Soviet’s attack just beneath their attention. Distrust grew between the Soviet and the West. This event ignited the start of the Cold War. Finally, all the countries were vigilant of the spreading Communist Parties. Canada, also in reaction to the Gouzenko Affair, created the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. It is to act as a separate civilian service to stop the spread of Soviet Communism. At the end of 1950’s Canada had agreed to sign the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This treaty was of military alliance against the Soviet Union. Its duty was “to safeguard the freedom, common heritage and civilization of their peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law.” “During two years of life in Canada, I saw the evidence of what a free people can do. What the Canadian people have accomplished and are accomplishing here under conditions of complete freedom- the Russian people, under the conditions of the Soviet regime of violence and suppression of all freedom, cannot accomplish even at the cost of tremendous sacrifices, blood and tears.” After a long wait, the arrest was finally started. On February 1946, the crew of listed names was arrested. Prime Minister Mackenzie at last informed Prime Minister Clement Allee of England and President Harry Truman of the United States of the espionage cases. Another disturbing discovery was of Klaus Fuchs, a German scientist and greatest traitor. He worked in the “Manhattan Project, in Los Alamos, New Mexico” Involved in the actual construction of the atomic bomb, he sent information on the manufacturing methods and test results to his Soviet contact.
