Why France will be the dominant side in world rugby

Rugby is a minor sport in France, compared to football, but since FFR was formed 80 years ago, France has been one of the leading powers of world rugby. France won the Grand Slam in 2002 when they took apart England and in the same year, Fabien Galthie won the International Rugby Board’s Player Of the Year award. Even though they are ranked 4th in the world, their exceptional world cup record and calibre of players, led to them being labelled as the dark horses for the 2003 world cup. Unfortunately for France, they lost to England in the semi-finals, but the tournament allowed Les Bleus to show the world the quality of their young players such as Frederik Michalak and Imanol Harinordaquy. The electrifying semi-final match against Australia ended 30-24 to France, after a stunning last minute try from brilliant fullback Blanco. In 1999 it was the colossal 43-31 trouncing of red-hot favourites the All Blacks, also in the world cup semi-finals, gave the world one of the biggest upsets in RWC history. The All Blacks found themselves with a 14-point lead just after the break and it seemed as if the only way Jonah Lomu and company would lose the match was if France produced a remarkable comeback or if the New Zealand defence folded. New Zealand’s worst nightmare became reality when French fly half Christophe Lamaison scored 23 second-half points and then Philippe Bernat-Salles landed the killer blow by going over with moments remaining. In all France have played 29 matches in the world cup and have won 22 and drawn 1. This record made France the only northern hemisphere nation to reach two rugby world cup finals until England matched the achievement in 2003.

Finally, the current and past performances have given the French National rugby team the foundation to become the top team of the
