Dialects

An interesting idea that was brought to my attention throughout this semester was the notion of dialects being in essence, their own language. With this said, why are we taught to be ashamed of our dialects, especially if you have a southern dialect? What point was there ever a unified language in the United States, from which we are judged to be speaking correctly or incorrectly?

The reason I am interested in the dialect issue is that I, myself have a dialect stemming from the mountains of eastern Kentucky. My dialect isn’t pronounced as most of the people from around my hometown, but it’s still there and very noticeable. Before the ideas that I learned from this class, I had mixed feelings on the issue of trying to change the way I speak. Now I have learned that my dialect is a part of me and my culture and in a sense it is its very own language. This helps me to feel more confident around people who are not from home.

American Tongues is a major catalyst to the ideas behind this paper. The program opened up my mind to how strong a dialect can be and how different they can be from one another, even though we live so close to each other. The British sounding dialect of the upper class of Boston and

Before watching American tongues I felt no need for there to be a standard form of English. My opinion has changed now, but not drastically. I believe that for the general population to be able to understand the news and other such things in writing and on television there should be a specific language so everyone can follow. My belief of standardized English ends from that point on. A dialect is an important part of who we are. It is the way we speak, and the way we communicate with the rest of the world. In certain situations we must all know how to speak standardized English just to help the communication process, but this is a time when you are being proper and not exactly yourself. If you become ashamed of your dialect then you are ashamed of who you are, and I believe this is a terrible thing to expect anyone to do.

In taking this course I have gained a better understanding of the English language. This understanding has given me more confidence to speak without being afraid of comments about the way I speak, because now I can reply with an impressive argument explaining why I speak the way I speak and how there is nothing wrong with it, it’s simply a dialect, just a little different from theirs.

I have found that when I find myself in an environment among many different dialects it is more comforting and I feel less restricted in my speech as I may while at school or among m
