Can slot machines save raceing

Can slot machines rescue racing? Attendance at the nation’s racetracks has been declining for decades, leaving busted, empty tracks across America” (Timmons 76). I would like to use Churchill Downs as a prime example of the progression of thoroughbred racing. It may be hard for those who are not from Louisville or from the state of Kentucky to understand the tradition of Churchill Downs as well as the intensity of the Kentucky Derby. But let me tell you, on the first Saturday in May, there is no place on earth quite like Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. America’s best-known three-year-old thoroughbreds run in the world’s best-known horse race, which is the Kentucky Derby.

Initially the Derby was just a horse race. In these years the Derby solidified its place as one of the three big events in American sports, along with the World Series and the Super Bowl. “For Louisvillians, Derby week is a nonstop festivity. The city of Louisville takes its Derby seriously, and many civic and governmental groups collaborate in planning and consuming the annual Kentucky Derby festival, one of the largest such celebrations in the United States and now includes some seventy events” (Hirsch 100). “For many racing executive

Gambling is exciting. Betting on horses, playing slot machines and playing video poker machines are fun entertainment for most. But, “for some people, wagering or gambling becomes a serious problem, which they are unable to control. The lack of control leads to a state of compulsive or pathological gambling” (Be Smart Bet Smart). Gambling becomes a problem when a person “loses time from work, school or family life in order to gamble, gambles until all the money is gone, gambles to win back money lost through gambling, lies to hide gambling activities, boast about winning, vague about losing, and fails time after time to reduce or stop gambling” (Be Smart Bet Smart).

s, Derby week is a businessman’s holiday during which they feel they can see more people and get more work done than at any other time of the year” (Hirsch 100).

At the present time, thousands of Kentuckians are going out of state, to Indiana, Illinois, West Virginia, and Mississippi, to gamble. According to the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, “Kentuckians are spending $400 million a year at the six casinos operating on the state’s border with Indiana” (“Northern Kentucky”). This is mind- boggling to me. Common sense tells me that Kentucky should do what is necessary to stay up to par with surrounding states so that our state does not continue to lose millions of gambling dollars to other states.

Playing slot machines and video poker machines is an enjoyable form of entertainment for most people. There are many kinds of slot machines. Video poker machines include games such as poker, blackjack, bingo, and keno. Other popular slot machines include: wheel of fortune, diamond deluxe, red white and blue, triple cash, and double diamond, just to name a few. Slot machines have so much appeal and people venture out of Kentucky to engage in this popular form of entertainment, when slot machines could so easily be established in our own backyard, at Kentucky racetracks.
