Voting
There are a lot of various opinions on what the best method of achieving the country’s goals should be. Supposedly, all U.S. citizens are intitled to their opinions and also are involved in the political decision making for our country. In the United States we have what we call a representative democracy. The representatives that we the citizens vote into office are suppose to help voice our opinions so we have say in the government. This system does not always work the way it should, but the government finds it to be more plausible and fair than any other option.Political participation is very important for a democratic nation like ours and without it the country would fall apart. Therefore, since we have such a striving nation political participation must be high in the United States. Political participation could be anything from voting to actually joining a political party. How stable is our democracy and exactly how much do people participate in our republic? Political participation has decreased in the last decade and analysts expect even more of a decline in the decade to come. The number of voters compared to the amount of the people that could vote in an election was horrible. Is this decrease in participati
In conclusion, the United States of America does need to increase their political participation, especially with voting. The way to do this is not only to make it more convenient by voting on the Internet but also to make Internet access to political information easy. Having Democratic and Republican web sites or web sites on each candidate would heighten political awareness in this country, especially with today’s youth, which we all know is tomorrows future. In the United States voting is not mandatory, it is a right. Voters choose to vote because they want a representative government. In the case of a representative democracy, the voters are the ones who believe that their voice counts and will make a difference in the laws and policies made in this country. This concept is the meaning of our republic, a democracy in which our country stands for. These citizens are educated and politically informed. There is a small number of intelligent voters which is preferred to a higher number who vote just for the sake of voting and have no real political knowledge. The right to vote should not be abused. Voting should be done on the basis of the issues and not because “people should vote”. However, some people do not think it is important to actively participate in politics. Civil rights activists believe it is important to have the right to do these things, but should not be forced to. In other countries, such as Australia, citizens are required by law to vote. This policy is not agreeable to our nation for a few reasons. First, it gives up a part of our freedom. Second, if people are made to vote they will be making a decision based on a whim and not because they are aware of the issues. In this country people who vote, for the most part, vote because they follow the elections and want their voice to be heard. The media’s live coverage of election results may also deter voters from voting. This is because results of one state maybe reported before polls are closed in another. Sometimes, when people know that a candidate is winning they feel their vote is unnecessary.
