The curse
What do Mookie Wilson, Bill Bartman, Bill Buckner, Babe Ruth, Leon Durham, and goat have in common? If you weren't a baseball fanatic you would have said absolutely nothing. But ask any baseball fan like me and they would quickly answer you. these names will forever be part of the two greatest baseball plots of all history. They are two curses that haunt each respective city every year. curses that take you on a rollercoaster ride only to find out that the track was never finished and you are now on your way to total doom. They are "The Curse of The Bambino" for Boston Red Sox fans, and "The Curse of The Billy Goat" for the Chicago Cub fans. Although separated by many miles in distance their sorrows come close to each other every year. When it comes to baseball their fans are united in the similar pain and struggle every year. The older of the two curses is the one supposedly placed by George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth on the Boston ball club. Hence, it is known as ‘The Curse of the Bambino’. Long before Ruth started his reign as the Sultan of Swat for the Bronx Bombers, the New York Yankees, he was a pitcher of extraordinary talent for none other than the Boston Red Sox. The Babe’s prowess on the mound and at the plate
On the other side of the spectrum but looking in on the same looking hole are Chicago Cubs and their curse, The Curse of The Billy Goat. It all started on October 6, 1945 when a greek tavern owner by the name of William "BILLY GOAT" Sianis he had bought box seats for himself and his goat Murphy for the 4th game of the WORLD SERIES. The Cubs had won 2 out of 3 in Detroit and were favored to win it all in Chicago. In the past Sianis had always been allowed to bring his goat to the games, besides Murphy had his own ticket. This time, however, as Mr. Sianis walked into Wrigley Field the ushers prevented his entry, telling him that no goats were allowed. When Mr. Sianis asked for an appeal directly to owner P.K. Wrigley, P.K. told them to allow Mr. Sianis in but not Murphy his Billy Goat. When Mr. Sianis asked why, they said, because the goat smells. That upset Sianis and standing in front of Wrigley Field in retaliation, he raised both hands and said, "Cubs, they not gonna win anymore. They never gonna be another World Series played at Wrigley Field". Subsequently, the Tigers won the next 3 games and the series and the Cubs have never been back. The Cubs' loss prompted Mr. Sianis to send a telegram to P.K. Wrigley asking, "Who smells now?" after that the Cubs have never made it back to the fall classic. there have been several chances, but once again evil pops its ugly head. like on September 9, 1969, Mets fans released a black cat on the field during a game at Shea Stadium in New York. The cat crossed behind Ron Santo, who was in the on-deck circle and in front of the visiting Cubs' dugout. the Cubs who inspite of playing excellent baseball all year long fell out of first place the day after the incident, and never made the playoffs. The Mets won the World Series that year. perhaps the most eyebrow raising occurence happen in 1984, the Cubs won the first two games of the NLCS at Wrigley Field, only to falter and lose to the Padres in five games. McKeon was a part of that series, as he was San Diego's general manager. In Game 4 of that series, the Cubs were heartbroken as Steve Garvey belted a two-run homer off Lee Smith in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 7-5 San Diego win. Then in Game 5, with ace Rick Sutcliffe on the mound, it seemed the Cubs would finally end their drought of not making it to the World Series since 1945. Chicago was ahead 3-0 and was still hanging on to a 3-2 edge entering the bottom of the seventh, but
