Tenure: Good or Bad?
Teaching has been seen as a noble and high position for centuries. Many great and influential people of this world have been called “teacher.” Socrates, Plato, Jesus Christ were all known as wonderful teachers. In order to be a true teacher, one must inspire his or her pupils to strive for a better understanding of the world, to cause a desire to learn. A teacher, in order to perform at the highest standards, must be well educated, convicted about particular area of study, and dedicated to providing quality education for others. What has teaching become in today’s world of education? … It has become a distorted and manipulated glory by so many because of one little word: Tenure. In simple terms the world tenure means “the status of holding one's position on a permanent basis without periodic contract renewals” (Dictionary.com). Because of tenure, unfit teachers are allowed to continue teaching for years after their expatriation date has passed. Although some aspects of tenure are positive, the harmful negative aspects outweigh and good. A problem occurs with tenure when it protects teachers from being released from a job that is unsuitable for them; therefore, the problem with tenure must be solved.

In most circumstances the teachers continue to teacher according to the professional standards that lead to their awarding of tenure. However, in some cases harmful results occur due to tenure. Tenure does not only allow the good and proper teacher to remain, it also allows for the bad and unmotivated teacher to remain in the school system. These poor teachers are transferred from one school to another with great recommendation because each school wants to rid their own school of the bad teachers. Another problem with tenure is the fact it causes competition between the professors rather than unity. University professors know that only a few teachers are tenured; therefore, these teachers feel they have to compete with one another to become tenured (Martinez). Another concern for tenure is that once teachers obtain tenure, some forget the reason he or she became tenured. The purpose of tenure is to protect the teachers, give rights to the teachers — not the stand in teacher assistants.
