The Great War

At the turn of the 20th century, the nations of Europe had been at peace with one another for almost 30 years, but all that is about to change. There were many efforts to outlaw war and achieve permanent peace, but there were forces at work that would propel Europe into one of the biggest wars of the century. Before the war started, there were many forces that setting the stage for one. One of those forces was the steady rise of nationalism. Nationalism helped by causing intense competition between nations. Another force was Imperialism, which help by causing competition for colonies in Africa and Asia. The growth of Militarism helped by making citizens feels patriotic. However, it also struck fears into the hearts of many people. In 1879 Bismarck made alliances with Austria-Hungary and Germany, and three years later Italy joined, forming the Triple alliance. In 1890 Kaiser Wilhelm II forces Bismarck to resign, and soon set Germany on a new course and to show the world how mighty Germany is. Alarmed, Britain decided to form an entente with France and soon with Russia. It was to be called the Triple Entente. Also tensions in the Balkans also could have led to war because there were many nationalist uprisings and ethnic clas


Consequently, Austria’s declaration of war on Serbia set off a chain reaction that drew many European nations into war. Russia mobilized along Germany’s border just as a precaution, but to Germany the mobilization amounted to a declaration of war. So on August 1, 1914 Germany declared war on Russia, and three days later, Germany declared war on Russia’s ally France. Because of the event of a 2-front war, Germany used the Schlieffen Plan, in which Germany would attack France first, then attack Russia. Then Germany attacked Belgium, a neutral country, which then caused Britain to declare war on Germany on August 4. There were 2 sides fighting this war now, the Central Powers and the Allies. On September 5, the first battle had started on the Marne River. By September 13, the Germans had been driven back, and the allies had won the first major clash of the Western Front. This victory was very important because it left the Schlieffen Plan in ruins. A new type of warfare was developed during this war, and it was called trench warfare. Also many new tools were developed, machine guns, poison gas, armored tanks, larger artillery, airplanes, and submarines. By now the Central Powers had gained upper hand, and Russia’s war effort weakens due to the fact that Russia was not industrialized. However, thanks to its tremendous population, Russia was able to hold its ground against Germany. Soon the war had spread to Africa, and many parts of southwest and southeast Asia. Now the massive European conflict has indeed become a world war.
