Visconti

Count Don Luchino Visconti Di Morone was born on 2nd November 1906 in Milan. He was born into an aristocratic family, one of the seven children of the Duke of Modrone and had a highly privileged upbringing. During his youth he mixed with luminaries such as conductor Toscanini, composer Puccini and the novelist Gabriele D'Annunzio. Not surprisingly, he had an early interest in music and theater. He was introduced to Jean Renoir with whom he worked briefly as assistant on Une Partie de campagne (1936) by Coco Chanel, which turned his attention towards cinema. During this period, Visconti, previously a Fascist, switched to Communism. The Italian Communist Party commissioned him to produce a series of three films about fishermen, miners, and peasantry in Sicily but only La Terra Trema (1948) was made. This film, along with Rocco and His Brothers (1960), both portraying the plight of the working classes, were routinely censored by Italy's post war right-wing establishment.

In Rocco and His Brothers, Visconti creates a beautiful picture that also happens to be horrible at the same time of Milan in the 1960s, when the "immigration" from the South was at its peak, and the social problems in Northern Italy exploded. The differe

Renato Salvatori has a tremendous performance as the troubled brother Simone, while Alain Delon plays the calm and controlled Rocco, who is the protagonist in this movie if there is one at all. Boxing is used as a metaphor for the anger the young men feel, but when Simone fails, Rocco succeeds by fueling his fighting with the contempt for his brother's actions. The two brothers are torn between the beautiful prostitute Nadia, whom they both love passionately, but she only loves Rocco and that almost breaks the family. The other brothers are more supporting characters. The second youngest brother, Ciro, is an interesting and morally strong character that probably could have been developed further. The pride, ignorance, hatred, loyalty and love of these people are held together by a perfect script by Visconti. The camera in this film plays a huge role in moving through the streets, houses, and locales of a growing, but morally decaying Milan. Visconti does something very interesting when presenting the ideal of life in the country throughout the movie, though not even once we actually see a scene in the country. But at the same time Visconti through his characters criticizes the poverty of Italian country, and also destroys the dream of a better life in the big city, and finally closes the film with a touch of optimism.

nces between north and south in Italy are enormous, and they were probably even greater back when Visconti and his script writing crew decided to make a contemporary film about a family moving northwards. Visconti wanted to make a film about a mother and her five sons, like the five fingers on her hand, as the mother herself exclaims at the end of the film. This is not a film made f
