Leadership biography on Nelson Mandela (20 pages)

Nelson Mandela is one of the greatest moral and political leaders of our time. A man who has dedicated his life to fight against the racial oppression of the apartheid regime in South Africa, the man who became the worlds most famous prisoner, the man who won the Nobel Peace Prize, and the man who became the first democratically chosen black president of South Africa. The story of Mandela’s life is that of a continuing struggle for justice, a story of hope and fear, of setbacks and disappointments, but eventually, the story of ultimate triumph.

The story of Nelson Mandela, born by the name Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela, begins on July 18, 1918 in a small village in South Africa in the Transkei province, called Qunu. Rolihlahla stands for something like ‘troublemaker’ which is kind of a paradox since Nelson being a child should rather be describe as timid. He is the kind of child who tries to prevent troubles and avoids confrontations. The name ‘Nelson’ is given to him at his first day in school when he was seven years old. It was common at the time that African pupils were given a British name; whites were either unwilling or unable to pronounce African names. Nelson was the first of his

African National Congress in 1942 he enters politics for the first time. This means he is already 24 years old when he first really encounters political life. He is therefore considered to be a political ‘late’ developer. But when he found he wanted to fight the oppression he knew he had to take these steps. He realized that he needed cooperation in order to achieve his goal. Mandela has never been a man who wanted to operate alone, be the sole leader, he has always been very aware of the fact that he needed allies and colleagues to cooperate with and followers to support them. Mandela is the kind of leader who distributes power rather than dominating it. He knows he got his leading role through the people and he shares it with his colleagues. That is why he realized joining the ANC would be the right step in order to struggle for his ideals

things taught in school. In school there was no room for the African culture and all that was British was thought of as being superior. British was for him thus the ruling culture

Another characteristic of him as both a person and a leader is his natural attitude of ‘royalty-ness’. Most people think that he has this stature because he was the son of a royalty, but since he was a foster child of the Regent he does not have ‘real’ royal blood. But him growing up close to the Paramount chief made him adapt their attitude and habits, this combined with his ‘natural royal attitude’ makes him a very momentous person. Most people meeting Nelson Mandela are very impressed by his appearance; he is a man with a tremendous presence. He is a tall, handsome gentleman, who always

People knowing Mandela all agree that he had something special in his appearance. Nelson Mandela combines the two cultures he met growing up in his bearing and looks; the appearance of an African aristocrat combined with that of an English gentleman.
