The American Civil War was the result of Southern rebellion and President Lincoln?s determination to keep the country united. I will do my best to explain to you what I think eventually led to the first shot being fired on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861.1 The blame for this war can neither be put on the North or the South. South Carolina leading a rash of secessions, the birth of the Republican party and their nominee for president Abraham Lincoln, and last of all the attempt by Washington D.C. to stop the spread of slave states into the new west. All of these issues combined made for a very tense time in America. On December 19, 1860, following the election of Abraham Lincoln, South Carolina called a convention to take place at St. Andrews Hall in Charleston to vote on secession. The next day, the delegates voted unanamously (169-0) to secede from the Union.2 South Carolina was only looking out for the best interests when they seceded. They felt that a Republican president and his policies would prevent them from functioning and prospering in a way that they always had.
