Don Juan, Canto II

This poem is “enormously popular.” In the first canto the hero, Don Juan, wrecked on a Greek Island and saw the daughter of a pirate, Haidee. The daughter and the hero fall deeply in love. Together they are on a rocky coast with creeks merging out of the ocean. When the huge waves come in, the sun reflects its ray on the ocean to create a sparkling glitter effect.

There is no wind for the sand or the waves to be blown. You can hear the seabird’s cry in all the stillness. The only time the stillness is disturbed is when the leap of a dolphin and the waves flew up the sides of the rocks and water moves up the shore.

Together they walk without her sire. Haidee has no one. Zoe waited on Haidee all day. She brought her water, washed her hair and every now and then asked for her old dresses.
