Pascal

As one of the original thinkers behind probability theory, Blaise Pascal developed what is commonly referred to as “Pascal’s Wager” in an attempt to prove by deductive reasoning that believing in a higher power was more rational than not. He did not strive to convince that God in fact does exist, but rather the probability that there is a God is great enough that it would be foolish for one not to believe. In doing this Pascal was not able to develop a theory that applied universally to religion, but instead created a dichotomy between those who believe in a Christian God, and those who do not. For this reason “Pascal’s Wager” better served as a defense of Christianity and as a justification of the Christian faith.

The Wager initially establishes that it is not necessary to prove that God exists for him to actually exist. Pascal likens this to the number infinity. He states that although we do not know what the number infinity is, we are well aware that numbers are not finite. In knowing that numbers are not finite we are able to gather an understanding that there is an infinite number, whatever that may be. By the same method of proving infinity he claims that, “therefore we may well know that God exists wi

Not only does Pascal tend to contradict himself throughout his Wager but there are also various arguments that can be made against his points. The false dichotomy that is created between Christianity and atheism does not take into account the numerous other religions which also worship God’s for which that God may be the correct God. If his claim is that there is a larger burden of proof illustrating the belief in a Christian God represented by the numerous followers of Christianity, one must take into consideration the part that Christianity played in eliminating a large portion of non-Christians throughout the world, especially during the Crusades. One must also take into account that for Pascal’s Wager to be convincing one must have a disposition to believing in Christian ideals. For instance, a follower of Islam would not be convinced that if they did not believe in the Christian God, they would go to hell, because it is also true that the followers of Islam believe that they are worshipping the correct God. The same would go for any follower of any other religion holding reverence to a different God than that of Christianity. The odds would be far less convincing when taking the multitude of other Gods that are worshipped into consideration, because if one would chose belief in the wrong God than he/she would automatically receive a ticket straight to hell. The last example of a hole in Pascal’s Wager comes from a misconception of Christianity that is not covered by Pascal. Assuming that Christianity is correct, Christian doctrine claims that salvation is earned through Christ, not merely through belief in Christ. With this said, Pascal assumes that the only condition that must be met to go to heaven is to believe in God, and the only condition to go to hell is to not believe. These are just a few points that are not covered by Pascal in the creation of his Wager.

Throughout Aphorism 418 in which the main portion of the Wager is addressed, Pascal tends to not provide language pertaining to any specific religion. He does defend Christians at the beginning, and makes reference to Catholicism specifically, but his words do not claim one religion over another. It can be assumed up until this point that he is arguing on behalf of Christianity because of his background, although he did not make it clear. However, the last few Aphorisms included in the Wager section do explicitly make claim to Christianity as being the proper choice of religion. Pascal claims that “n
