People’s View and God’s View of Bioethics
People’s View and God’s View of BioethicsWhat is normal for the human race? Is the human race in the United States normal and all other countries races abnormal? Is the United State’s race abnormal? The term normal is much more difficult to define then it sounds. In genetics, normal is used to indicate the wild-type or the gene that is most suited to survival and reproduction. As for as the human race, have we come to the point where the norm is pretty much whatever we can afford? When reading Newsweek, Time, and the U.S. News and World Report, I thought that the articles on genetic research stated facts and only facts. After rereading all the articles from the magazine articles I found that this was true to some extent. But, some authors put a little bios twist to the articles. They may even refer to religion in the article as well, but most of the time you have to read in between the lines. I did not see this until I reread the articles for the third time and tried to read between the lines. The first question that comes to mind, is who is the person that helps the scientist come up with the genetic research? Who is that person looking over their shoulder? Is it God? I would have to say God is that person
In reading an article in the Time Magazine, I found the website of the United States President’s Council on Bioethics. On the website I found an article called “Human Cloning and Human Disunity: An Ethical Inquiry. This article is talking about the United States government has divided cloning into two main ethical issues: Cloning-to-produce-Children and Cloning-for-Biomedical-research. looking over the scientist’s shoulder. God was there with Gregor Mendel in 1865 when he proposed the concept of the gene (US News and World Report 120:12). God was still there in 2003 when the Human Genome Project was completed. God, will continue to be that person looking over people’s shoulders helping them out. The government has come up with five main cases for cloning-to-produce-children: to produce biologically related children, to avoid genetic disease, to obtain “Rejection-proof” transplant organs, to “replicate” a loved one, and to reproduce individuals of great genius talent, beauty (US Council on Bioethics). The government has also came up with arguments against cloning humans: this will affect the goodness of human freedom; it is right or wrong, goodness of existence, and goodness of well-being against cloning. The problems of cloning start with the safely risks to the child, the egg donor, and birth mother. Other problems with cloning humans as stated by the President’s Council is abiding moral concern, special problem of consent and exploitation of women, and just distribution of risk. There were many other concerns and problems that the council of Bioethics had but I think these were the main ones. There are points in the articles that talk about ideas against Gods views. Like an article on cancer, where Fred Appelbaum says, “ This is the first fruit, (this cancer drug) the clearest example of what many people involved in cancer research have hoped to see.” (US News and World Report 130:20). This is not true because God created the first fruit, the apple. There was another article that changed the meaning of a word from God’s definition. The article talks about gene research and how James Watson co-discovery of the structure of DNA was the Holy Grail. This is not what the Bible taught us it meant. The Bible says that the Holy Grail was the cup that Jesus drank from at the last supper. Sociologist, Barbara Katz Rothman says, “You have cancer because of who you are. Cancer becomes an expression of our essential nature.” (Newsweek 132:26) I believe that God didn’t
