In Ken Dryden’s work entitled Guy Lafleur he uses the style of an essay to discuss how sports have become more organized over time. In Dryden’ opinion this is not a good thing because players are not given the opportunity to experiment, or invent without restrictions. For this reason an essay was the appropriate choice of writing style, Dryden chose an essay to “argue for a particular point of view” instead of writing a story to express a moral, or a theme that expresses the concept of an idea. Dryden’s choice of an expository-biographical essay is excellent because “an expository essay is written to expose an idea or point of view by giving detailed explanations and definitions.” The idea that Dryden is trying to express is that, “in the name of team play, there is no time for individual virtuosity…” Dryden identifies the point that he is trying to make in his thesis and then supports it with several examples from sports such as hockey and soccer. The author, Taylor, uses an essay when writing Call of the Weird because similar to the typical essay, the author is trying to make a particular point. In this particular piece, the point the author is trying to prove is that just because he is part of a Native American theatre company does not mean that he knows everything about Native culture, and that he does not know every Native person that exists. Taylor writes about how people continually waste his time phoning him and asking him silly questions anywhere between “Do you know so-and-so from this tribe?” all the way to “I need information on a Native American dance, can you help me?”. The thesis in this essay clearly states the point that the author is trying to make, “while one of our functions as a theatre company is to educate the public, that does not mean one at a time, about obscure issues, while our other work waits.” The choice of an expository essay is a good one because Taylor is trying to convey a particular point and it would be more difficult to convey
