An Inspector Calls: A Mystery Or Morality Play?

An inspector calls is a play written by J.B Priestly and is set before the first war and before the launch of the Titanic

I believe an inspector calls is a morality play rather than a mystery because this play does not only about the death of a woman it is about the circumstances and the way that all of the people involved treated her because of their own morals and how they have been brought up in they now updated system of classes

You can see from the way J.B priestly wrote his characters that this is a morality play rather than a mystery as he wrote Mr. Birling to be the wealthy, industrious man who has strict morals and firmly believes in the “class” system this is shown by the way he treats his employees he believes that as he is higher in status and class he does not have to listen to the “common” peasants and this unfortunately was the view of most of Britain until the end of the war this is also shown is Mrs. Birling as she points out several times such as when she tells her husband not to thank the cook for a nice meal as she believes that the “masters” of the house should not be talking to someone as low down in class as a servant , she is not cruel to the servants but she does not go out of her way to

Inspector Goole attempts to show and do this but is rather unsuccessful at getting Sybil and Arthur to change their views and ways but gets Sheila and Eric thinking about it in the part of the play where Sybil reminds the inspector the her husband was once lord mayor was her not so subtle was of telling the inspector that the are socially superior and should not be messed with and the way the inspector brushes that comment by shocks Sybil as she has always been used to being treated with the utmost respect she is also completely sure that when she turned Eva /daisy away from her committee she was completely right and was very happy that her answer was correct until she found out that her son was the father of this woman’s child then her attitude changes all the way through the play until this point she has been very haughty and quite sure that she has done nothing wrong , then she struggles to convince herself and the inspector but when the inspector leaves and she finds out that he was not a real inspector she regains her usual haughty manner but the inspector has left a mark upon Eric and Sheila,

be nice , Eric is also the embodiment of all that is wrong with the world at that time a boy with no respect who does not know the meaning of money treats Eva Smith/ Daisy Renton like a piece of meat and the only way he attempts to help her is by stealing money from his father , Sheila also shows no compassion for people who are lower down in class than he
