In this passage, Herring is explaining that affirmative action is needed to make up for and prevent discrimination in America. In result of equal opportunity given by affirmative action, true merit will be recognized in society and people of color will be treated better. Next, in the article called “Gephardt backs race-based admissions”,[inside] writer, Michael Kirkland, wrote about people and universities that support affirmative action in schools. àK reports that Democratic presidential candidate, Dick Gephardt, supports the affirmative action policy at the University of Michigan. He[Kirkland? Gephardt?] states:

K. reports that Gephardt supports the current policy and says that the Bush administration’s policy is not efficient enough to maintain diversity in higher education. Also, Kirkland writes,[comma] “Meanwhile, the University of Michigan has told the justices in a brief that if colleges are not allowed to use race as a factor in their admissions policies, it will "de-integrate" the nation's institutions of higher learning”(Kirkland)[unnecessary]. He also claims that The University of Michigan feels that without affirmative action, colleges will not be diverse.

McWhorter opposed affirmative action at Berkeley because it was mainly helping middle class minorities, who had equivalent or similar resources of[to] a middle class white student, get into the university with lower SAT scores. He feels this process is unfair. He argues that Blacks have made such a great advancement since the 1960’s that the majority of African-Americans are not disadvantaged anymore. Therefore, there is no need for a policy that is designed to assist the minorities, because we are doing well. But, McWhorter does not completely oppose affirmative action. McWhorter “vigorously applauds the fact that Affirmative Action was instituted in university admissions thirty years ago, when concrete disadvantage was still a reality for so very many minority applicants” (McWhorter). He feels that racism was such a big factor in the 60’s and that the only way to get African-American into universities was through affirmative action. àà??Secondly, William Julius Wilson feels that affirmative action in today’s society is based on “quotas and numerical guidelines to guarantee equality of results, which is how ‘affirmative action’ has come to be understood—and widely resented”.
