Oklahoma!
Oklahoma! is a love story set in the Oklahoma Territory in the early 1900s. It is an idealized view of a simpler time and an upbeat, exciting version of frontier life in the Old West. I really liked how Rodgers and Hammerstein completely integrated musical numbers into a coherent plot. It wasn’t the first show to do this (that was Show Boat), but it was the show that ensured this would be the norm for decades to come. The musical numbers were important because they were used to reveal information about the characters. This is an example of dramatic irony in Oklahoma! This story centers around Curly, a good-natured ranch-hand; Laurey Williams, the stubborn and sweet farmer’s daughter; and the menacing hired hand, Jud Fry, who is trying to come between the young lovers. Laurey is very independent-minded and must decide between the two suitors who want to take her to a social.
