My Experience of Contact Zone

Being an international student is not an easy task. I came to the United States about five years ago and attended high school in New Jersey. My first day of English class, was exciting, nervous, and memorable. The experience was far beyond just transculturation and bilingualism. It made me realize that it is better to be active in class, learned how to pronounce English better, and gained an understanding for verb tenses. My English class was unforgettable because it was the first class I attended in America.

I was shivering when I took the first step into the room of my English class realizing that I did not know anyone I saw. I was quite unfamiliar with the way the seats were arranged around the classroom as I was trying to find a seat. I found a seat and saw a girl next to me talking to an other guy in Chinese. I felt a little bit relieved by the fact that there was someone else who was from my nationality. The English teacher then introduced himself. He was quite young and looked like a nice person. This made me thought that this class would not be as hard as I imagined. However, the first thing we did in class was read Shakespeare¡¦s Romeo and Juliet. I heard about this piece a million times, but never knew what exactl

The teacher explained to us that this is an old-English style of work. After the short reading of Romeo and Juliet, the teacher gave us the first assignment, and it was to study vocabulary words for the first quiz tomorrow. I took a quick glance at the vocabulary book. I did not know any of the words or their meanings. I left the class with a miserable feeling that I had never felt before.

This contact zone experience that I had was memorable, and very beneficially to me. Differences of the learning environment, distinctive teaching techniques, and the reciprocal relations between the teacher and the students were all the new experiences that I had gained from my first English class. By that I learned to be active in the class, to ask questions if I do not understand, and be able to argue with other people if I do not agree with their opinions. Although I was having a hard time with English, I filled the holes of my understanding of the language with significant amount of working time. This contact zone experience was very precious for me personally. It was very different from what I have experienced before.

I notice some instances of transculturation in the first day of my English class. Teac
