Sex On TV

Producers and writers need to not only show that casual sex is good but also as bad. By producers and writers I mean the people that make the movies and shows the public views. Television, the shows and movies aired for public to view. And by showing casual sex I mean showing that sex as something good to practice on a regular basis. Producers of television shows have been putting too many scenes in movies and series showing casual sex. This isn’t just a problem in the U.S. but throughout the world wherever movies and shows are broadcasted. Viewers usually only see the good side to sex from television and movies. It’s depicted as something great that everyone does on a regular basis, before marriage. There should be more or at least equal emphasis on the bad things that can happen when people are careless with sex. This would teach the youth today a good lesson on the bad and sometimes harmful outcomes of casual sex. Society should even things out by showing the bad outcomes of casual sex.

In theory we can say that life imitates art.(http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/1997/02.27/AIDSExpertsUnit.html Copyright 1998 President and Fellows of Harvard College) What people see in movies and on television is g

This issue could have come about in the 60’s when everyone started being careless with sex and stopped looking at things such as virginity as a good value to hold and turned to casual sex. As more and more people were participating in sexual activities outside of marriage it started to become more accepted. As the public’s acceptance and tolerance of casual sex grew the more movies and shows there were being made showing sex scenes also grew. (Barnouw, Erik, Tube of Plenty: The Evolution of American Television,(1990)Even though sex has and always has had many downsides, showing the downsides didn’t sell movies and shows so the writers, directors, producers, and censor board mostly ignored that fact. I know this from what I’ve seen in older shows and movies that came out before the 60’s and how since then they have gained more sexual content. We could watch any show or movie made in the 50’s or before and then watch a show or movie made after the 70’s or 80’s and see how the content has changed.

Many people believe that movies and TV are for entertainment and should not be responsible for teaching lessons. Movies and entertainment are for entertainment but in today’s world kids spend more time watching TV than listening to their parents. So they will be more apt to be influenced by movies and shows they spend a lot of their time watching. So even if parents try and teach their kids right from wrong they will see the opinions of many others on the TV.

Television is defined as a system for reproducing an actual or recorded scene at a distance on a screen by radio transmission, with appropriate sounds; vision of distant objects obtained thus. This word comes from an article in the 1904 Daily News as “televista”, seeing by wire, the name given to Dr. Low’s invention. There are few other uses of the term other than to communicate through television as an art form.

I found that sex is defined as “to have sexual intercourse”. The word sex is actually a slang term for intercourse and was mainly used to name “either of the two divisions of organic beings distinguished by male or female” until the early forties. In my claim I use the term casual describing what kind of sex. Casual, in the Oxford English Dictionary, is defined as occurring or brought about without design or premeditation; coming up or presenting itself as it chances”. So without a definition to be found for “casual sex” I put together these two terms to say that casual sex , in my words, can be defined as “intercourse without design, as it chances.”

Movie makers and public must understand what is happening. They need to understand that the bad sides to sex are not being shown and this is affecting our youths outlook on casual sex. We must get the public to stand up for what they believe is right and for movie makers to start initiating change in they shows and movies they make. The changes I see that need to be made are not take sex completely out of movies and shows. I don’t even want them to not show that sex can be good. The changes need to be to show that casual sex can lead to harmful outcomes along with showing that if treated right sex can be good.
