Since Jane Eyre is the main narrator, her reliability and honesty can be questioned. Would she change something n a flashback so it wouldn’t make herself or other look differently? Would she exaggerate on some events but maybe overlook others? These are all natural questions when questioning ones integrity. I felt that even though Jane could have changed things in her past and we would have no idea, I feel like she wouldn’t. She really as no reason to change anything because if she would have changed events to make her look better then she would have taken many things out. One last question is whether this book would have been better if told in a third person view? I believe that some parts could have been better if in a third person view, because in a third person view the reader knows what everyone is doing and there is no bias. But by using a third person view you loose a lot of intimacy, character, and heart that you receive when using a first person view. I think a third person narration would have been useful though, when discussing Rochester’s past. Since Jane is the narrator, she does not know about Rochester’s past too much, just what he tells her. But if there was a narrator, we could have gone back through Rochester’s life and learned more about Bertha and his family. This could have helped answer many questions about why Rochester is the way he is, and why he reacts to Jane and others the way he does.
