Live or die
One topic of the world that continues to have controversy is abortion. Abortion has continued over time causing two groups of people to form due to controversial decisions. One case that helped these groups form was Roe vs. Wade. The first group of people is pro-life, who believe that abortion is wrong and the child should be born regardless of what caused the pregnancy. The second group of people is pro-choice, meaning that they believe that the mother should have the choice of keeping or aborting the baby. Religious beliefs, understanding, and personal preference are some factors that affect how each group feels and the way they present their argument. Whenever the word abortion is used, the first thing that comes to a person’s head is removing the fetus from the mother that does not want to have the child. However, the dictionary has abortion defined as termination of pregnancy and expulsion of an embryo or of a fetus that is incapable of survival, showing much difference to the opinion of most people. Pro-choice argues that if the mother knows the child will come out sick or mutilated should not the mother have the choice to have the baby aborted. Pro-life replies that if someone finds out he/she will become sick
According to pro-choice, the mother should have the choice of having or aborting the baby depending upon her circumstances. For example, if the reason for conception is rape, then the mother should choose whether to abort the baby or to go through with the pregnancy. Another instance where the mother should be allowed to abort the baby is when the mother is unfit, meaning she may be too young or may not have the financial means of supporting the baby. However, Roe vs. Wade had to occur before women gained the right to choose abortion. The Supreme Court made one of the most controversial decisions in recent history and ruled in favor of abortion, causing most of the anti-abortion laws to become ineffective. The mother could then have an abortion whenever she deemed acceptable. The decision, made on January 22, 1973, sparked a revolution in abortion. Many similar cases followed Roe vs. Wade causing a major victory for pro-choice as well as for women’s rights. Abortion is now legal on all sides of the country, yet some states have placed restricting laws upon abortion. In a different manner, the decision of Roe vs. Wade increased the number of teenage pregnancies, illegal abortions, and child abuse, instead of decreasing them like pro-choice first thought. In conclusion, abortion is a topic that has caused much controversy over the years. Pro-life and pro-choice groups each distinguish unmistakable points tha
