Binge Drinking
Binge Drinking is a increasing problem around the country recently. People start to binge drink for many different reasons, and that affects many different people. In order to be considered binge drinking a person needs to have 5 of more drinks in a certain time period. ( “Binge Drinking On” pars. 1) Binge drinking affects many people at many different ages. For instance a parent could be out binge drinking and decide to drive home and ends up getting in a deadly accident. That effects the binge drinker their selves and their family. That binge drinker was only thinking about themselves at that point in time. That is way binge drinking is currently a big problem in the United States. People not thinking ahead and affecting others lives. There are long term and short term affects of binge drinking. There are many things that can happen to a person you binge drink on a constant basis . One thing that will happen to them is that they will become an alcoholic. There are currently 14 million alcoholics and they all got their reputation by binge drinking. Alcoholism is a deadly disease that has four symptoms. There are a couple more reasons why college students binge drink on a routine basis. One of the reason is because of the cheap alcohol. In a study it was reported that 57 percent of underage college students bought beer for less than a dollar, got it free, or paid a set price for all the alcohol they could drink. ( “Underage Drinkers Pay” par.6) “Alcohol has become the drug of choice on campuses today. It’s fashionable,” Spanier said at the National Press Club in Washington. ( “Despite Awareness It” par.5) Another reason is because alcohol is so easy to get hold of. Any friendly 21 year old will buy alcohol. Although it is thought that it is mainly guys who binge drinking, that is wrong. College girls are as much involved in binge drinking as the guys are in today’s college campus life. Some people argue that in order of a women to be considered binge drinking they only need 4 or more drinks in a certain time period. That is because women are smaller and can not absorb the alcohol a well as the guys. In a recent study done by Columbia it is reported that 35 percent of college women drink to get drunk. (“The Problem is” par. 3) The college campus life has a type of Greek life also. You can choose to live in a sorority for women and fraternity for guys just as a way of meeting friend and making connections. According to a 1996 study it is found that 80 percent of Greek women are binge drinkers, when only 35 percent of non-Greek women are binge drinkers. Another affect of binge drinking is a person physical condition. A binge drinker becomes out of shape. A binge drinker gets a beer belly and gets winded walking short distances. They can also ruin their internal organs due to their best friend called alcohol. Binge drinking increases the chances of getting certain cancers. There are 4 main things in your body you can harm when drinking, that is the liver, esophagus, throat, and larynx. The main organ that gets the most damage is the liver. ( “Alcoholism: Getting The“ pars. 3) When a binge drinker become intoxicated they lose control of what they are doing. They put stuff into their body that may effect them down the road. Some binge drinkers only smoke when they are drinking and that ruins their lungs. Binge drinkers are often very touchy and are almost always willing to fight or hit things. When two binge drinkers start fighting it is not pretty. They can’t feel if they are hurt and just keep on going. They also just hit things or bystanders for no reason. This can effect their performance at work or school. Binge drinkers lose the balance due to their impaired vision and can injury themselves.
