The Dark Abstraction demonstrated O’Keeffe’s signature technique of simple, flowing curves and lines, with brilliant colors that complement each piece. The colors of Dark Abstraction all related to her past memories and therefore add much more emotional and visual appeal. The painting is eye catching and holds a viewers attention due to the simplicity of the colors and shapes. Overall I chose this piece because of its dark, bold, and strong colors, and because of the unique simplicity of the enlarged image. I have always been fascinated by O’Keeffe’s way of filling the canvas with energy to create such intimacy within the piece. Many feel that Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings represent the beginnings of a new American art, free from the past assumptions of what art was really supposed to be.
