Francis Marion
To understand who Francis Marion was you have to look at his nickname, Swamp Fox. A swamp is an area of low ground filled with water or a marsh, and a fox is a group of small, wild, flesh eating animal of the dog family or a sly, cunning, deceitful person. In this case the definition of a sly, cunning, deceitful person is used. So you can assume that Francis Marion knew the swamplands very well, and that he was a very clever person. As you can see this is very true. Francis Marion was born in 1732 in St. John’s Perish, Berkley County, near Georgetown, South Carolina. He was the first generation of his ancestors to be born in America. His ancestors were originally descendants of French Huguenots who settled on the Santee River. As a young boy, Francis enjoyed exploring the swamps and wooded areas around where he lived. Sometimes he would be gone for hours on end just wandering around with his brothers or playing games in the swamps. (Bodie 21) When Francis turned fifteen he had dreams of becoming a sailor. Against his parent’s wishes, Francis set sail on a voyage from South Carolina to the West Indies. His boat sank a quarter of the way there, and he floated around on a lifeboat for a week. After this expedition,
At the fall of Charleston Francis Marion escaped capture on May 12, 1780 because he was afield. Later in May Francis attended a party hosted by Captain Alexander McQueen. The Captain had locked all the doors to ensure that all of the guests drank his wine. Marion would not drink, so to escape from the drunken festivities Marion jumped out a second story window, fracturing his ankle. (Patriot) Francis Marion is one of the greatest soldiers ever to live. He is one of the south’s most famous military leaders. He impacted not only the South, but also the whole country. Even today you can still see how he has been an impact on the South. Some examples are Francis Marion University, Francis Marion Hotels, Marion County, Francis Marion National Forest, and the USS Francis Marion. Also, Marion was originally the lead character in “The Patriot”, but because of controversy and to allow for more dramatic storytelling, a fictional character Benjamin Martin was produced in his place. Marion is one reason why the southerners of today are proud of where they live and who they are. He returned to Pond’s Bluff to live, and in 1786 he married Mary Esther Vidreau. Four years later in 1790 Marion represented South Carolina at the Constitutional Convention culminating his many years of multifaceted service to the state of South Carolina. On February 27, 1795 Francis Marion died
