In The Beginning God Created The Heaven
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 Nelson’s New King James Version)Throughout time there have been people who have tried to disprove the belief that a holy God created the earth on which we now live. This belief has been fought by politicians, scientists, and even religious leaders, but in the 1800’s there was one man who would shape the opinions of many. He would make the claim that this world wasn’t created, but it had evolved over the course of billions of years. He had little to no evidence to back up his theory, but to this day there are still people who believe the claims that he made. This paper will bring several key arguments against the theory of evolution by highlighting the flaws that exist within the theory, as well as, strong arguments for Creationism. This will in turn give credibility to the belief that God created earth and not geological phenomena that have shaped the earth over the course of billions of years. In order to better argue against evolution, one must know the beliefs that surround creationism. The Bible teaches that God created the world out of nothing. He didn’t use pre-existing materials, but he simply spoke this world into existence. In
Now, there have been those who have attempted to reconcile the apparent age of the earth with Biblical material and they have done so with several theories. One of these theories is the Gap Theory. This theory claims that the original creation was completed billions of years ago and this is what is recorded in Gen. 1:1. This theory states that there was some sort of catastrophe that occurred (such as the fall of Satan) that caused the earth to become empty and unformed (Gen 1:2). At this point, God recreated the earth and populated it with all the species approximately six thousand years ago. The recreation of the earth took only six days and this is the creation that is described in Gen. 1:3-31(Newton). We are now about 120 years after Darwin and the There are so many gaps in the theories of evolution that scientists cannot come to an agreement in regards to the origin of mankind. However, unlike evolutionists, all creationists do agree on the origin of mankind: God created Adam from the dust. Still, Creationists do have varying ideas of the process that God used to create mankind, the world, and all the things in it. (Cypser 60) The Cypser also states, “Some think that God snapped God’s fingers and the earth appeared instantaneously, fully equipped. Others feel that if there were a natural, but slow way to produce our planet, God would have gone in that less spectacular direction”(19). This is an area where there has been tension between science and the Bible. There have been attempts that have been made by scholars to date the age of the earth using the genealogies of the Bible. Arch Bishop James Ussher used the genealogies of the Bible and arrived at a date for the creation of the earth at 4004 B.C. (This would date the earth at approximately 6000 years old.). MacArthur states that The fourth of these theories is the Pictorial Day Theory. This theory states that the days of creation are the result of Moses’s (the writer of Genesis) logical structuring rather than chronological order. What this means is that God revealed the creation of the world to Moses in a series of six pictures or visions. Moses then arranged these visions in his own logical grouping. These groups eventually took on the form of six days rather than six visions. It can be argued that this theory conflicts with belief that the Bible is the infallible word or God (Newton). Newton goes on to describe a third theory known as the Age Day Theory. This theory is based upon the fact that the Hebrew word “Yom”, which is most often interpreted as a 24 hour period, can also mean a long period of time or an epic. An example of this is where the Bible says, “with the Lord one day is as a thousand years. . . ” (2 Peter 3:8). In Gen. 1, the Bible speaks of the days of creation. This theory claims that when Gen. 1 speaks of a day, it is not speaking of a 24 hour period, but it is speaking of long periods of time. Therefore this theory claims that God created the world in a series of acts over long period of time (Newton). This issue caused a lot of controversy throughout the world and it appeared as though a line must be drawn between science and faith. There were still some Christians who believed that science and the Bible corresponded with and complemented each other.
