The world is a mess

The world is a mess? The task of finding a place to accommodate the mess is the self appointed task of the playwright and the actor. All existentialists share the same false belief that we, as a species, are imperfect. This comes about after they lost faith in science and technology, after they saw that we could make our last choice suicide, after they saw that we could literally wipe ourselves, or just one nation off the face of the earth. A global holocaust was possible. With reference to, the conclusion of the Second World War. They were no longer able to sit back and watch it they needed to get out and express themselves and give themselves a purpose for being here. They achieved this in the short-lived art form of absurdist theatre.
Samuel Beckett wrote one of the more successful absurdist plays, in 1956 called "Waiting for Godot". In this he poured in tones of symbolism and embodied a lot of the existentialist beliefs into it. Suicide being the last conscious decision that we can make. This is shown several times - when Didi and Gogo try to hang themselves, these are mostly spur-of-the-moment ideas. Although the end of the play has the two of them planning to hang themselves, which shows that are in control of their actions and therefore conscious X also shows this conscious decision in "The Zoo Story". The way that Jerry keeps referring back to what Peter will read tomorrow, "wait until you see the look on his face". Simply put, Jerry planed for Peter to kill him, which in an odd turn of events is counted as suicide, at least to an existentialist.
Another aspect of the existentialist philosophy is the meaningless of life. We are here to wait out our lives, devoid of meaning and purpose unless we choose to give it one, everything starts and ends with a choice. Such as the choice to wipe out life as we know it. The meaning of Didi and Gogo's lives is to wait, this is what they have chosen to do.
