The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby was wrote by F. Scott Fitzgerald and is said to be an American classic. Paul Academy, the Newman School, and had attended Princeton for a short while. In 1917 he joined the army and was posted in Montgomery, Alabama. This is where he would meet his future wife Zelda Sayre but first he had to make some money to impress her. Having his first novel, This Side of Paradise published and a bestseller accomplished this. Zelda's schizophrenia and Fitzgerald's drinking problem led Fitzgerald to rely mostly on his short stories for income. Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald ended up dying in Hollywood on December 21, 1940. The plot of The Great Gatsby was about Jay Gatsby's attempt to win back Daisy Buchanan now that he had attained money. Fitzgerald's novel contains many symbols, themes, and characters throughout the story that make it a classic.
First, Fitzgerald's unique use of symbolism and symbols gave the story the emphasis to be called a classic. There are three main symbols in the story, the green light, the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, and East and West Egg. The green light is a versatile piece of symbolism in the book. It's most obvious interpretation is that the light is symbolic of Gatsby's longing for Daisy, but that is too simplistic. Gatsby has spent his whole life longing for something better, like money, success, acceptance, and Daisy, but no matter how much he has he never feels complete. Even when he has his large house full of interesting people and all of their attention, he still longs for Daisy. So the green light stands for all of Gatsby's longings and wants. When Nick talks about the green light at the end of the book he says, "It eluded us then, but that's no matter- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms out farther.". (189) He connects the green light to all people. Everyone has something that they long and search for that is just off in the distance.
