The sex lives of teens

The book I chose to read is called, The Sex Lives of Teenagers, written by Dr. Lynn Ponton. Dr. Ponton is a psychoanalyst and a professor at the University of California, specializing in adolescent psychiatry. She has more than twenty years experience working in the field. I think we can all remember what it was like to be an adolescent. Many of us do not have pleasant stories about it, but it was a crucial time in our growth. I found that this book opened my eyes to the different ways that individuals developed their views about sex.

There were many reasons why I was drawn to read this book. I was curious to know if the acts my friends and I did when we were younger were abnormal. Also, I have three younger sisters and I thought this book would give me a better understanding of what they are going through, right now. This book is broken down into chapters that each discusses a different story about an adolescent. In these chapters, it is the Dr. documenting the conversations that she was had with these teenagers.

Flipping the pages, the first thing that jumped out at me was the title of the first chapter, ‘Studs and Sluts’. I was curious to begin the book simply based on this title. In this chapter, the a

Masturbation was a topic that came up very frequently in this book. Another story that I wanted to write about deals with a different type of masturbation. Sexual fantasies are a type of masturbation that excites your internal self. In the next story, a fifteen-year old girl named Heather was sent to see the doctor because she was having fainting spells. After talking with Heather the doctor was able to determine that she had many issues with sex because of her parents. Her parents practice strict Greek Orthodox traditions and did everything in their power to protect their daughter from being exposed to anything remotely sexual. Because of this Heather felt isolated and began having sexual fantasies (as any healthy human being would) as a way to develop her own sexual behaviors. During these sexual fantasies the young girl would get so worked up and nervous, she would faint. Stories about sexual fantasies are a normal and healthy way to embrace human nature. As humans we are all sexual beings who cannot be enslaved by the values and traditions of our parents.

Through out this book, I have found a common theme within all of these teenagers. In every situation there was some type of family issue that caused the teenager to rebel in some way. Daniel the young boy who was masturbating with the vacuum cleaner obviously knew that this method was unsafe. It turned out that Daniel had deeper issues that involved his mother taking him and moving across the country away from his father. With no father figure in Daniel’s life, his mother did not know how to approach the topic of sex and masturbation. She failed to let him know about normal and safe ways that he could approach the situation.

I am very happy that I chose this book to read because it allowed me to learn about some non-traditional ways that teenagers deal with society and sex. I am happy that this book was full of stories that allowed me to r
