How did Bombs Affect People’s lives in World War II?

There were mainly three countries that were bombed regularly, those being Britain, Germany and Japan. Factories, ports, and railway junctions were bombed frequently, and since bombs often missed their targets, civilians were hit as well. One should try to imagine how terrifying a bomb raid could be - dead people lying on the floor brutally injured, people screaming and shouting for someone to help them, everything around them being destroyed, and babies crying without stopping!

Source A is a picture of a railway and a train. Without the railway, people couldn’t travel as easily as they could before; and trade also decreased as goods couldn’t get from one place to another. The above picture is of the remains of the railway after hundreds of bombs were dropped on the Polish defenses, followed by German forces taking over and occupying the country. Japan’s experience of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima was probably one of the most important events in history. On August 6, 1945, the B-29 Enola Gay, piloted by Capt. Paul Tibbetts dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. To this day, Hiroshima still has an unusually high amount of radio-activity. Source D shows after effects on the city of Hiroshima.

Don Foye: You think of who is next and feel very sorry for them. Once I was in a foxhole with a guy who had just explained to me how he was scared stiff. Before that the company commander had come up to me and said, "Donald, we’ve got a batch of replacements." We got new guys every day of the week; they didn’t last an hour. And he said, "Here, try to keep this guy alive, will you? He seems like a good guy."

Aaron Elson: What’s it like to see all these people falling around you?

Joanna Mack and Steve Humphries, London at War, 1985.
