MP3 trads
Mp3’s are a good thing. A response to Curt Harris. I have personally downloaded mp3s, just like many others I know. If you look around mp3s are everywhere from news headlines to billboard ads. Many recording artists are against them stating its their music and your listening to it for free. Political actions have been taken to restrict certain downloads. So why don’t we just abolish all mp3’s? Curt Harris answered this question in his article “Napster of puppets,” published by The BG News, Harris argues the benefits of mp3 file sharing. Harris takes this position by comparing mp3s to modern day tape traders. He says it’s just like back in the old day when we used to tape record off the radio. The prices of cd’s don’t help deter people from downloading mp3s either. Harris states an example from his own life when he heard a song but didn’t know who it was. He got home searched for it on Napster downloaded it and loved it. Then he bought all his cd's and saw him in concert twice, all due to mp
In sum, Harris’ article is important because it examines the benefits of downloading mp3 files. It offers explanations for why people download mp3s and also explains how the record companies are just hurting themsleves with cd prices so high. But I think the article is limited and needed more hard facts. For me personal experience doesn’t work. I need some facts to back it up, which I really didn’t see in his article. He underemphasizes the opponents of mp3s and why they oppose it. Over all mp3s are good things, just as Harris puts it in his article. Harris doesn’t explore the cd sales when mp3s came out. If you look at the statistics, cd sales dropped very noticeable when mp3s came out. There is a strong relationship with the raise in cd prices and the decline in their sales. Harris also bases his article mostly on personal experience. For example he could have done some research on why people are against mp3s and put that data in this paper. Personal experiences are helpful but not everyone thinks
