Sound of music

I am doing my next concert attendance report on “The Sound of Music” that came into Memphis in February. This is a great musical that most people are very familiar with. During this performance I was mostly a referential listener, drawing from what the characters were going through and singing about, and relating them to things in my own life.

The seating arrangement for the orchestra looked like this:

The woodwinds such as flutes and clarinets were in the front

The string instruments were next on one corner and the brass on the other

While the percussion instruments were stationed in the back.

The songs that were sang are on the playbill and they were absolutely fabulous.

“Maria” was a soft and sort of low key song, with the main focus being the woodwinds


“Sixteen going on Seventeen” is a great song in general. The main focus of this song was the string instruments, woodwinds, and vocals. The strings harmonize with the woodwinds, bringing about a classic, harmonized sound, while the vocals are kept together by a man and a woman. The purpose of this song is to really make the listener feel the love of the characters. The tempo isn’t really too slow, but it isn’t too fast, either. There is a contrast in highs and lows with the different instruments.

Climb Every Mountain” is a slower tempo song with a great unity and variety. It’s great when the vocals sound like the instruments. The rhythm was kept by the percussion instruments, and all of the instruments played the melody, as well s the vocals. The piece was great an
