I agree with Kant about our moral duties to animals. In my view animals are here for humans to use. There is an enormous difference between the life of humans and other animals. First of all, humans are clearly more significant for the simple reason that they are at the top of food chain. This is what allows people to control society and environment. Combine this with the fact that humans have the ability to reason, and it is clear that people have more significance. I do not believe that cruelty to animals is ever morally permissible. The way a person treats animals is in direct correlation with the way they treat humans. I also believe that the more respect and care you show to an animal the better it will serve you. The better an animal serves as a means the easier it is to accomplish the end.

I fully side with Kant on this issue. Animals are tools and like any tools, they shouldn’t mistreated or misused. When you take care of tools (I.E. animals) they last longer and perform better. Your duty is not to the tool, but to yourself to make the most out your tool and use it in a way that will benefit society. I believe this was Kant’s same basic belief in how we should treat animals.
