Arthur Miller’s The Crucible is a heart-wrenching tale of the Salem witch trials during the late 17th century. Amidst the growing hysteria of the townspeople, the strict court works under the idea that they speak with the “authority of God.” However, for the accused there are only two options: deny charges of witchcraft and hang, or confess, whether it be truth or not, and suffer imprisonment. John Proctor is the tragic hero of the play, hanged merely out of an attempt to save his acquaintances from death.
