The study of Organizational Behavior (OB) focuses on investigating the influence that the people within an organization and the organization itself has on the behavior within and how that behavior affects the performance of the organization (p. 9).

OB, as we know it today, began in the early 1900’s. In response to the growing strength of Unions, businesses like Heinz and International Harvester hired people as “welfare secretaries” who assisted the employees with improved working conditions, medical care, education, and personal time (p. 39). Between 1930 and 1950, there were many studies on the human part of an organization. One of the most important contributions was a study by Western Electric that altered the light levels in the worker’s area to see if it would affect their productivity. I believe this course will improve my understanding of OB helping me replace my use of intuition with that of systematic study when it comes to people’s behavior in the workplace (p. 10) With that knowledge I can be a better coworker and in the future, a better manager.

Another challenge that is presented often at work is something Robbins calls “Temporariness” (p. 19). I find that change is constant but also find some people do not like to go along with the change. Robbins cited M. Kaeter in saying that “workers need to continually update their knowledge and skills to perform new job requirements” (p. 19). One of the reasons I have continued my education is to ensure that I remain employed. I do not know that people in my office would be terminated because they have not learned the newest skill, but I do know that my job depends on how skilled I am at Microsoft Office.
