Why “the eyes of God?”
“I told her she might fool me but she couldn’t fool God.”(p.166) God seems to have disappeared in Fitzgerald’s famous novel, The Great Gatsby, which is set in the 1920’s Jazz age. The Great Gatsby illustrates how the 1920’s society declines from a respectable, honest environment into a careless and selfish community. The billboard, depicting Dr. T.J. Eckleburg’s eyes, is called “the eyes of God” by Wilson, as it witnesses every immoral and careless event happening in the valley of ashes and its surroundings. By examining Gatsby’s parties and their consequences, the affairs in the novel and Myrtle’s death, it is obvious that “the eyes of God” witness immoral and careless events. “Old men pushing young girls backward in eternal graceless circles [and] superior couples holding each other tortuously, fashionably, and keeping in the corners” (p.53) is only one of the typical scenes of what people do in Gatsby’s famous parties. People driving drunk after every party and passing “so close to some workmen that [their] fender flicked a button on one man’s coat” (p.56) is something seen as ordinary in the Jazz age
However, people might think that drinking is not such an immoral act, therefore would not consider this novel sinful, but there is another good reason to believe it is. Cheating on ones couple is not moral, this is something constantly seen in this novel. Tom, although being married to Daisy, has “some woman in New York” (p.21) and Jordan is surprised to find out that Nick has no idea about this because she “thought everybody knew” (p.21) meaning it is not something that Tom has as a secret. Apart of being something dishonest to cheat on ones couple, Tom does not even have the decency of keeping it secret, making matters even worse; he even wants Nick to meet his girl, not even caring that Nick is Daisy’s cousin. This is not the only affair that is witnessed in this novel, although Daisy acts as if she were resigned to accept her husband’s affair, meanwhile, she has gone “over quite often – in the afternoons” (p. 120) to Gatsby’s house. This might have nothing wrong in it, but what makes it suspicious is that Gatsby fires all his servants and finds “somebody who wouldn’t gossip” (p.120) meaning there is something to
