Capital punishment is not used any more in the Netherlands but there are enough countries where it is still used every day. Some people think that capital punishment is a good thing and others think that nowhere in the world the death penalty should be used. I will describe some positive and negative effects of capital punishment but first something about the history of it.
In the past people thought that capital punishment was ok, the Bible was not really against it and the Koran approved it. So why should the people be against it. In the middle ages the death penalty was used very often and on the worst kind of ways. In the middle of the sixteenth century the application of it decreased. In the Netherlands it was since 1870 only applied on severe crimes. Later, in 1983, capital punishment is forbidden in the constitution for all crimes. My opinion about capital punishment is that it must be forbidden in every country and for all crimes. Because you can not bring back a person who is not guilty but who is executed and because the death penalty is not heavy enough for severe criminals. Severe criminals are just being killed but when they get life sentence they have to live for the rest of their life with their crime, so that this person has to suffer for the rest of his life. But I am not really sure because on one hand I think “How must it feel to be executed yourself when you are not guilty?” and on the other “When a criminal like Dutreaux escapes and commits awful crimes again, you know that it could be prevented when he was executed”.
Important reasons to be for the death penalty is that the criminal can not come back for revenge and that it has a frightening effect on the people, so that less people commit a crime.
