“Planning: Getting Off On the Right Foot” – Linda Mohr

In the presentation given by Linda Mohr, she introduced different ideas and concepts on how to start off a business on the right track. She gave several ideas to think about before entering a venture. Self assessment and the reality of what it is going to take, knowing what to expect and planning for the unexpected, knowing who to call and where to find inspiration were all topics discussed in her presentation.

In the self assessment arena many people need to understand that the workload, the work hours, and the pay are all uncertain aspects of starting a business. We also need to understand the whole concept of why we are looking to start our own business and assess the risk involved. Business owners must work well under pressure and be able to adapt to change rather well. They must be able to inspire others to do well and have the drive to make the business do well. Business owners must also like to interact with people and know how to handle different personalities in relation to their employees as well as their customers.

Ms. Mohr also gave the group some incite on common start-up mistakes. Many people underestimate the capital needs in starting a busine

scheme into everything that you can. The fourteenth tip is to offer personalization to your customers. Everyone loves personalized products and services. Tip fifteen is to have FUN. Having fun helps lighten up the transaction and the tension between the customer and yourself. The sixteenth tip is to spread the news. Find a way to spread the new to your customers about your new products or promotions. Tip seventeen is to use more than one marketing strategy and follow up with different styles of marketing. Tip eighteen is to connect with the customers wants or needs, listen to and connect with what they want. The nineteenth tip includes your website. You must have an easy to navigate website that can capture data and relay sufficient information to current and prospective customers. And the last tip Mr. Marx’s gave was to be outrageous. He feels that you should do outrageous things that other companies wouldn’t dream of doing and to do them unexpectedly.

Legal issues were another aspect discussed by Ms. Chapman. Once you decide that you are going to start a business you need to file for a license and file the proper papers with authorities in your state. Home owners should also check with their insurance companies about additional coverage on the business that is incorporated into their homes. You might also want to discuss these issues with a lawyer to make sure that all the proper paperwork and procedures were followed on your part to avoid any litigations or fines.

The last topic that we discussed in Ms. Mohr presentation was how to name your business. There are some criteria to have in mind when giving your company a name. The name should be unique. This will make the business stand out. The name should be memorable. Your customers should be able to remember your name easily. The name should be uncomplicated. If the name is too complicated the customer may not be able to give the correct name to another potential customer. The name should be no more than one or two syllables and the name should be non-descriptive.
