A Visit to the Salvador Dali Musuem, in St. Petersburg, Flor
The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida features the artistic creations of the twentieth century’s most famous surrealist artists. The museum by far, does not qualify itself as a typical art museum, from the moment you walk into the building situated off the bay near downtown St. Petersburg you step into an entirely different dimension. A dimension dominated by pierced heads, and tattooed arms, a dimension of college students (USF’s St. Petersburg campus is just a few blocks down the street) attempting to get a taste of “artistic culture,” it’s a dimension of old, young, black, white, Cuban, Haitian, and tourists, you could say the environment created is quite possibly as surreal as Dali himself. I myself was quite taken back during my visit, by the quite diverse group of visitors who chose to peruse the 95 oil paintings, 100 plus watercolors and drawings, and the nearly 1,300 graphics, photographs and sculptures. The museum appeals to all generations, age groups, ethni
The museum claims the title of permanent home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of Dali’s work and I would have to agree. Under one roof there are hundreds upon hundreds of pieces, I’m almost ashamed I only stopped in just to write my paper. It would take all day to examine and analyze each piece. I guess that would explain the museums 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. hours Monday through Saturday, and extended hours, their open till 8 p.m., on Thursday. Currently the museum is celebrating the “Year of Dali,” a 100 year anniversary celebration of the artist and his contributions to the artistic community, as well as society. The current exhibit titled: Dali Centennial: An American Collection has items from the museum’s extensive archives and library, including rare books, significant historic documents and handwritten manuscripts, there are also examples of published writings and early book illustrations, plus never-before-seen historic documents such as his birth certificate
