Wal-mart

In recent years companies have been trying to create a positive public image. They get involved in the community, sponsor fundraiser events and take stands on human issues. Public demand is the driving force for recent change. The public shuns on corporations who are polluting our water and poisoning our children. Interest groups and activists swoop down like hungry buzzards over prey and devour corporations. The media is right behind them as well waiting for any piece of information that can be used in a headline. Sometimes there is a very line between what is acceptable and unacceptable and other times its black and white.

An example of black and white is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is a multi-billion dollar company employing upwards of one million people worldwide. Their success has been due to their ability to import products lower than any other corporation and extend that low cost to customers. When you walk into a Wal-Mart they proudly display their ¡§Good Works¡¨ as they call it. They sponsor Salvation Army Red Kettle events, they display pictures of missing children and give you the number of children that have been recovered due to their postings, they offer grants to local charities, etc¡K A company who has it

Wal-Mart has been making headlines regularly for the past few years and today they are the focus of a major federal investigation. The attention has been on the labor practices of Wal-Mart. The accusations against Wal-Mart have been sky rocketing. Some allegations include:

Institutions that are involved include: local, state and federal government, legislatures, Media, NLC, NLRB, Immigration & Nationalization Services, Immigration & Customs Enforcement Agency, IRS, Social Security Administration.

„X Knowingly hired illegal aliens to avoid payroll taxes

all, lower prices and concern for the community. What customer wouldn¡¦t want to shop at Wal-Mart? Wal-Mart has gone through great efforts to portray a ¡§good¡¨ public image. Through all the research and efforts that Wal-Mart has made, their bet was that the public was superficial. While some may be, many are not.

Labor & civil rights have also been violated. In our country we have the right to organize and form a union. A man Sidney Smith from Jacksonville was the first one to establish a union in Wal-Mart in February of 2000. That was voted in was the United Food and Commercial Workers (for the meat cutters) (7) ¡§Eleven days later, Wal-Mart announced that it was eliminating the meat-cutting departments in all of its stores and would henceforth buy prepackaged meat elsewhere.¡¨ (7) Sidney Smith was fired from Wal-Mart from eating one banana from a box that he had permission to buy for 50 cents before he actually paid. Mr. Smith was stripped of his right to organize and was punished for exercising it. Many other employees of Wal-Mart have also had their rights violated and are now suing the corporation.

Wal-Mart¡¦s actions have literally affected thousands of people. The interests include: numerous advocacy groups including ¡V UFCW, Co-Op of America, Site for Social Action, Save the Children, United Students Against Sweatshops, NLRB, NLC, Wal-Mart Versus Women headed by Carolyn Snapp, The Right to Chose, East Mountain Citizens Against Wal-Mart and the National Organization for Women. These groups have stake because they have been created to protect the rights of certain individuals. Investors ¡V They have an interest on their investment and whether or not they will lose it. Bankers and Suppliers ¡V They¡¦re stake is loss of business if Wal-Mart goes under.
