President's views on marijuana
"...that early man experimented with all plant materials that he could chew and could not have avoided discovering the properties of cannabis (marijuana), for in his quest for seeds and oil, he certainly ate the sticky tops of the plant. Upon eating hemp the euphoric, ecstatic and hallucinatory aspects may have introduced man to an other-worldly plane from which emerged religious beliefs, perhaps even the concept of deity. The plant became accepted as a special gift of the gods, a sacred medium for communion with the spiritual world and as such it has remained in some cultures to the present." (Schultes Man and Marijuana)Marijuana is the most popular illegal drug in the United States. It’s a shredded, green/brown mix of flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves that gives off a strong odor. Marijuana comes from the Cannabis plant. The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). THC sets off reactions in the brain which causes the user to feel a euphoric high. In 2001 alone, more than twelve million Americans smoked pot at least once. Twelve million people thought that using the illegal drug was worth the risk of getting caught and apprehended.
“George W. Bush on Drugs”. October 22, 2000; accessed on February 24, 2004. .“Given the rapidly growing use of medical cannabis for a wide variety of indications and the manifold different underground sources currently supplying patients, there is a natural interest in investigating the potency, purity, and chemical content of the available supplies of medical cannabis. While the availability of medical cannabis has increased in the wake of the passage of California's Proposition 215 and other state medical marijuana initiatives, scientific research on its content remains frustrated by the continued federal ban on medical cannabis research.” (Gieringer Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies 20-22)
