The Spitfire Grill
The Spitfire Grill is the startling musical story of a young woman?s search for a new direction to her life. To a town with no future comes Percy Talbot, a girl with a past. Percy, a young woman that was just released from prison, steps off a bus and into the small town life of Gilead, Wisconsin. Her parole officer, the young sheriff named Joe, arranges for her to stay with Hannah, who owns the sole diner in town, the run-down Spitfire Grill. Hannah reluctantly accepts for Percy to stay because she doesn?t really need the extra help. Not everyone welcomes Percy's arrival, seeking to discover her secrets as they conceal their own. Amid prejudice, gossip and a secret that has crippled the town and its people, Percy works at the Grill, proves her worth and, as she heals herself, she helps to return spirit to the town. The word Gilead has three different meanings. The first meaning is a spiritual city east of Jordan River. The second is an observer and the third is a healing, soothing balm. These three definitions are shown all throughout The Spitfire Grill. Gilead has lost all hope. The people of Gilead has made one huge mistake putting all their hope into the hands of one, which eventually led the town to destruction.
They are going to do that again with Percy, or maybe not. No one has faith that Percy will amount to anything, at least not at first. Despite all the gossip that Effey is trying to start about her she still proves herself to rehabilitated, as if she was ever a bad person. The play itself was a really good story and although it was short and kind of corny it had a really good message to it. The third definition describes how [Percy helped the whole town and tries to relieve them of all their stress. Percy started an essay contest to help Hannah get rid of the Spitfire Grill, through this Percy helped to soothe everyone. At first everyone looked at the contest like a big joke. But as they saw all the money it was bringing the Grill, which was the focal point of the whole town, everyone got in on it. The whole town began to read essays and pick there favorites. This uplifted the spirits of everyone, houses began to be painted, and flowers began to be planted bringing Gilead back to the place it used to be. The people were somehow healed the began to see that they did not need one man to hold a town together. The first definition is a spiritual city. Gilead, Wisconsin is not really a spiritual city, but in this city ever
