Familiaris Consortio
On November 22, 1981, Pope John Paul II issued Familiaris Consortio or "The Family Community in the Modern World." The Church has always esteemed the family and seen it as a "domestic Church." It is in the family that the first seeds of true Christian living are planted and cared for in an atmosphere of love, mutual help, forgiveness, and selfless giving. The Church itself is the family of God the Father. The Church has a special care for the family as the basic unit of society and the community which first preaches the Gospel to the children of God, bringing them to full human and Christian maturity. "At a moment of history in which the family is the object of numerous forces that seek to destroy it or in some way to deform it, and aware that the well-being of society and her own good are intimately tied to the good of the family, the Church perceives in a more urgent and compelling way her mission of proclaiming to all people the plan of God for marriage and the family, ensuring their full vitality and human and Christian development, and thus contributing to the renewal of society and of the People of God." (Pope John Paul II) Pope John Paul II does not directly say alcohol, drugs, premarital sex and teenage pregnancy a
I feel that Familiaris Consortio helped me to understand issues in the past, present and things that can arise in the future. It was good to know that I agreed with many of the churches believes on certain issues and also that I agreed with the beliefs of Pope John Paul II. It also made me realize that I was uneducated about a lot of issues and aspects that were discussed. I was able to gain a better understanding of any issue I was not familiar with before reading the text. I didn’t realize how important children are and how couples overlook the fact that children should be brought into society since they are our future. They are the ones we need to focus on because they are what molds the future and they are what molds society. I understand how the church wants people to realize that they should incorporate their faith into their everyday lives and believe tradional values and customs. People feel that society will go back into what it was many years ago which is not true. If you include tradional beliefs and values into a modern society like what we are living in now, I feel individuals would live their lives in an improved manner, which would benefit society as a whole. I feel that the positive issues Pope John Paul II states are very true and agreeable. I feel the negative issues are present in today’s society and probably always will be if not worse towards the future. More and more each day the number of couples getting divorced rises and couples choosing not to have children. As more and more people become used to this way of life the more and more society will adapt to it. As an individual you adapt to your surroundings and feel what others do around you has an affect on your life and the way you live. This is how I feel things will end up. I do not agree with it but there is really no control over society and you cannot force someone to change their ways, faith or beliefs. Even though there are many good aspects mentioned above, negative aspects are always an issue as well. There is an enormous rise in the women today getting abortions. Also the amount of couples getting divorces has skyrocketed through the past few years. Couples today are more concerned with contraceptive and preventing conception than procreating. This becomes a very large issue. Children are the heart of a family and should bring happiness into their lives. By preventing pregnancy, arguments and other issues relating to this can form between
